Disability Services Application

MAY 24

COMPLETE BY

The Office of Disability Services approves accommodations for disabilities and/or major health impairments that affect your life. If you would like to apply for accommodations at JMU, you will need to complete this step. There are three phases for requesting accommodations: 1. Complete the Disability Services Application Review JMU’s Disability Documentation Guide- lines to determine what documentation you need to upload to your application. For information about applying for disability-related housing accommodations, visit the housing accommoda- tions page. 2. ODS reviews ODS strives to review all new applications with documentation within 15 business days. 3. ODS contacts you ODS staff will contact you at your JMU email with instructions for your next steps.

Q: What does it mean to have a disability? A: A disability is a condition that causes significant challenges in a major life activity, like learning, walking, seeing, etc. This includes disabilities such as ADHD, psychological conditions, learning disabilities, chronic illnesses, visual impairments, hearing impairments, orthopedic impairments and many more. Q: Does a diagnosis of anxiety, depression, autism, diabetes, etc. mean I can get accommodations? A: Maybe. ODS must go through a process to determine eligibility for accommodations. If you experience chal- lenges due to your disability and you have current docu- mentation, you can request accommodations. ODS will review your request in the context of programs, courses, activities, etc.

Q: What documentation do I need? A: The documentation you upload with your application should be 1) completed entirely by a qualified clinician, 2) provide current and comprehensive information about how your condition impacts you as an adult and 3) describe the accommodations you need in a college setting. Q: What accommodations does JMU offer? A: You can find a list of our most frequently used pro- grams and accommodations on our website. Each stu- dent’s needs are unique, so think about what you need and request accommodations accordingly.

Parking & Transportation

Students have options when navigating around campus, the Harrisonburg community and beyond. Access information about bus schedules, regional transportation, ride-sharing, biking and walking and more at the Transportation website. Parking All vehicles parked on JMU property must be registered with Park- ing and Transit Services. Unregistered vehicles are subject to cita- tion. You can purchase a virtual parking permit online. Bus routes begin at 7 a.m. and continue until about 11 p.m. on weekdays, with reduced schedules on weekends and holidays. The JMU Rideshare app pro- vides point-to-point directions, bus routing, and cycling and walk- ing routes. Several bus companies stop at Godwin Transit Center and provide transportation to local destinations, as well as airports and cities both in and out of state. Find out more at the Transporta- tion website. Biking JMU is a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly University. There are over 10 miles of bike lanes on campus. Financial Aid & Scholarships

Follow these guidelines to be considered for financial aid: ◆ Complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid online at studentaid.gov by the priority deadline of March 1. JMU’s Title IV Federal School Code is 003721. ◆ If you have already filed a 2024-2025 FAFSA and you did not list JMU, please contact the Department of Education at 1-800-4-FED-AID to add JMU. Once complete, the federal processing center will send your FAFSA information to JMU. If your orig- inal FAFSA had reached the federal processor by the priority filing date, then we will see that information. ◆ If your prior school has awarded you financial aid for the 2024-2025 academic school year, please cancel your aid. In some instances, JMU will not be able to disburse aid to you until this happens. If it is determined that additional information is needed to complete the FAFSA review, then an email will be sent to your JMU email requesting the necessary veri- fication materials. An official financial aid offer cannot be generated until the documents are received and the review is complete. It is important to reply to these requests for information as quickly as possible to maximize your financial aid package.

The process of sending official financial aid offers gen- erally begins around the end of June. Offers will be sent to your JMU email address. This notice will direct you to MyMadison to accept or decline your offers, as well as provide instructions for any additional documents that need to be submitted in order to complete the acceptance process. Please note that all students accepting a Federal Direct Loan at JMU for the first time must complete Entrance Loan Counseling and a Master Loan Promissory Note in order to receive their loan funds. Instructions will be given to the student on MyMadison after the loan is accepted.

Parents accepting a Federal Parent PLUS Direct Loan must complete a PLUS Loan application each year, as well as a Master Loan Promissory Note the first time they accept a Federal Parent PLUS Direct Loan at JMU (for a particular student). Instruc- tions for doing this will be included on the Parent PLUS Direct Loan Offer Notice, which is emailed to parents at the email address listed on the FAFSA. The notice is mailed if an email address is not provided. All students (and parents) are encour-

aged to review JMU Terms and Conditions of Financial Aid – Consumer Information at jmu.edu/financialaid for more information regarding financial aid and required disclosures.
