Academic advisors at JMU are committed to assisting students in developing and pursuing academic goals and learning how to function successfully within the university. University Advising coordinates academic advising for all incoming first-year and transfer students, provides advising for students who are exploring majors and serves as a resource for other academic advising offices in the colleges. University Advising has three academic advisors who specialize in helping students explore majors to find their best fit. Students can make an appointment with one of these academic advisors here. First-Year Advising JMU has more than 75 first-year advisors! Students work with their assigned first-year advisor from the summer before their first year until they transition to their major academic advisor in mid- February. First-Year Advisors help students • Set academic, career and personal goals • Understand academic expectations, policies, practices, procedures and dates • Learn how to use MyMadison to register for classes and perform other important functions • Select appropriate classes during their first year • Identify campus resources that may assist them in achieving goals Transfer Advising New transfer students are assigned an academic advisor in their major who will work with them to choose and register for classes. It is important for new transfer students to select courses for their first semester carefully to be sure they are making timely progress toward their degree. Helpful academic advising information for transfer students: • The Transfer Credit Report in MyMadison shows JMU courses they have received credit for • If they earn an associate degree that waives JMU’s General Education requirements, they need to send another official transcript from their community college after the associate degree is conferred. (Approved associate degrees can be found on the JMU transfer advising webpage.) • For questions related to courses and their major, they should contact their academic advisor • For questions that are more general to the transfer process, including transfer credit appeals and reverse transfer, students are welcome to email transferadvising@jmu.edu Madison Advising Peers The Madison Advising Peers care about their fellow students and are committed to helping them achieve their college goals. MAPs help students understand general advising issues that arise at JMU, such as General Education and degree requirements; utilize MyMadison to register for classes; make academic plans; interpret the academic requirements report; and answer advising questions. No appointment necessary -- just drop by the Student Success Center, 4 th floor Monday-Thursday during the academic year.
