Student Activities and Involvement jmu.edu/studentactivities How many organizations are at JMU?
Currently, JMU recognizes over 400 organizations. What types of organizations does JMU offer?
There are many different types of organizations to get involved in. Some focus on academics, business, community service, diversity, education, entertainment, fine arts, leadership, music, politics, religion, social issues and much more. There are also a number of honor societies and social fraternities and sororities. How do I learn more about an organization? Check them out online! We encourage and ask that all new students create a profile at beinvolved.jmu.edu using your JMU eID and password. This site allows you to see all of the organizations we have recognized on campus. You can search organization descriptions by keywords and learn all you need to know about joining that group, as well as a contact within the group for questions or more information. What’s the best way to get involved in an organization? The best way to get a feel about a lot of organizations at one time is to attend our semi-annual Student Organization Night that takes place at the beginning of each semester. Representatives from a majority of our organizations will be available to talk with you. These events are marketed heavily all throughout campus. Where do I go if I have a question about organizations? The Coordinator of Organization Development, along with the entire SAI staff, are available to help you with a multitude of organizational resources from finding a group that is a good fit for you, to assisting with transitions of officers, fundraising, retention of members and much more. How do I get in touch with an organization? SAI maintains updated lists on our beinvolved.jmu.edu website of organizations, here you will find a contact email and sometimes links to Facebook or Twitter pages. You can email them or message them directly through the beinvolved.jmu.edu site, once you have logged on. Does it cost money to join an organization? While some organizations collect membership dues, it is not a requirement of the university. The SGA Finance Committee allocates funds to organizations so many of them are able to get financial assistance from the university and through fundraising efforts, rather than from members. Where do organizations have meetings? Groups meet in various locations across campus and virtually. It is important to contact the specific organization directly if you are interested in attending a meeting. Are only students involved in organizations? While organizations here at JMU are focused around the student community, each organization is required to have at least one faculty/staff advisor who helps support the group’s activities and provides assistance to the officers and members as needed. Also, most organizations go beyond the JMU surroundings and reach out to local, national and even international communities.
