Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression jmu.edu/sogie
SOGIE works toward promoting JMU's commitment to diversity through education, support, advocacy and the fostering of equity for all students, inclusive of all sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions. Two full-time staff members oversee SOGIE with graduate assistants, peer educators and student volunteers. SOGIE is located in the Student Success Center on the first floor, between the Lavender Lounge and the pharmacy. Whether you are an LGBTQ+ student or not, if you are looking for support or resources around an LGBTQ+ experience, you are welcome to visit our staff. Resources SOGIE provides a wide range of educational programs and awareness events for the JMU community. Additionally, it provides a safe hangout space, called the Lavender Lounge, which includes a resource library with a large collection of LGBTQ-related books and other media that can be checked out by JMU students. It also houses the self-expression closet, a free resource for those looking to explore forms of gender expression, with clothes free to take. Student Involvement Students can receive leadership and facilitation training, attend retreats every semester and meet regularly for continued training, identity exploration and community development. • Peer educators facilitate dialogue and present to student groups all across campus on a multitude of topics from allyship, inclusivity, LGBTQ+ and more. These programs are offered to any classroom or student group. SOGIE hires new peer educators every spring. • Volunteers help raise awareness during SOGIE events in a variety of ways. New students can join our volunteer team at the beginning of the fall semester. Events and Programs SOGIE hosts semester and annual events throughout the year. Some of these include: • Monthly Puppy Pride • Monthly Queers and Coffee • Outreach tabling in honor of LGBTQIA+ Awareness days • Annual Trans Day of Remembrance Vigil • Semesterly Clothing Swap • Annual Trans Day of Visibility Speaker
