What is Safe Zone? Safe Zone is a voluntary network of faculty, staff and students who believe that every member of the university community should have an equal opportunity to grow and learn in a safe and open environment. When you see our sticker (a pink triangle with a purple and rainbow outline), you know you are entering an LGBTQ+ Safe Zone
What is the need for Safe Zone? Our LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff can feel nearly invisible on our campus and may sometimes find the climate uninviting or even hostile. The Safe Zone symbol sends a message of understanding, non-judgment and knowledge of the needs and concerns of sexual orientation and gender minorities. It is symbolic of willingness and a commitment to provide an atmosphere of acceptance and assistance. What can Safe Zone do for you? • Our stickers indicate safe places where you can feel comfortable coming and being out or sharing what’s on your mind! • We educate our members on LGBTQ+ issues and provide tools for becoming allies. • We help locate LGBTQ+ resources at JMU and beyond. How can I become a Safe Zone member? Individuals interested in joining Safe Zone must complete our training and sign a contract pledging to maintain safe spaces and preserve confidentiality. Members then receive a Safe Zone sticker to place at their workstation or on their door. Currently there are over 800 participants consisting of faculty, staff and students. How do I find a Safe Zone? Faculty, staff and students who participate in the Safe Zone training display a symbol in their area to identify themselves. In addition, visit the website to locate a member of the JMU community.
