enforcer, adviser and friend. RAs seek to promote a positive hall atmosphere that is safe, comfortable, friendly and supportive of the university’s academic objectives. An RA is also an important liaison between residents and the Office of Residence Life, housekeeping, maintenance and other administrative offices. • Hall Directors: undergraduate students, graduate students or full-time staff who have demonstrated exceptional talents in meeting the needs of students. They have shown evidence of special skills for supervising staff and managing a residence hall. Hall Directors are responsible for the overall operation of the residence halls. While serving as a resource and referral person for all residents, the hall director supervises RAs and performs duties for the Office of Residence Life. • Program Advisers: experienced students who staff the Residence Life Resource Center. They assist any JMU residence hall student with issues such as time management, study skills, test anxiety and leadership opportunities. They are specially trained to assist JMU students. • Academic Support: Staff members are trained to assist first-year students with acquiring necessary academic success skills. Students should make an appointment by calling 540-568- 3598. What happens if I want to change rooms? Except for a three-week period at the beginning and end of each semester, students may request a room change anytime. Students should consult with their Hall Director for room change procedures and necessary paperwork. Where can I go if I have a residence hall-related problem? Consult with your Resident Adviser, Hall Director or Residence Life. All Residence Life staff members can help with a variety of concerns including: academic skills and study habits, homesickness and transition to college, time management skills, social or roommate concerns, etc.
