The Office of Public Safety is comprised of the JMU Police Department, Risk Management, which incorporates a Risk Management Coordinator, an Environmental Health Coordinator and Safety Coordinator and Traffic Demand Management with a primary goal to maintain a secure environment for all persons living, working and visiting the university. The JMU Police Department has received accreditation from the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission after in-depth review of every aspect of the agency’s organization, management, operations and administration to assure the highest standards are practiced. The JMU Police Department has the responsibility of responding to and summoning the necessary resources to mitigate, investigate and document any situation that may cause a significant emergency or dangerous situation to the JMU community. How do I report a crime? JMU Police Department dispatchers are available 24/7 at 540-568-6911 to report a crime (non- emergency 540-568-6913). All criminal and fire-related incidents should be reported to the JMU Police through the dispatch center for response and documentation. Dialing 911 will directly connect to Harrisonburg-Rockingham emergency communications center. Campus-related incident calls will be transferred to JMU dispatch for police response. What methods does JMU use to communicate emergency information? In the event of a real-time emergency (weather emergencies, imminent threats, etc.) where students, faculty and staff need to take immediate action, JMU will utilize various means to communicate emergency messages: • Emergency horns, sirens and speakers • LiveSafe® app • JMU website • Blast email • SMS text messaging • Building coordinators, ORL, Hall Directors and Resident Advisers How do I find information about on-campus crimes? The most up-to-date statistics for the campus can be found in the Your Right to Know book, which is published every October electronically at jmu.edu/police/clerycompliance/Annual-Security-and-Fire- Safety-Report.shtml. A paper copy will be sent upon request. What is the Campus Cadet program? Through the JMU Police Department, the Campus Cadets are employed to act as additional eyes and ears for JMU Police. Cadets alert police of incidents for possible investigation, provide assistance during special events, help with building security and provides safety escorts.
