Parking and transit Services jmu.edu/parking Under what circumstances are first-year students allowed to have cars on campus? As a general rule, first-year students are not eligible to park on university owned or leased property. However, Parking and Transit Services may grant exceptions under certain circumstances These circumstances may include, but are not limited to, the student’s need to use a current, valid accessible permit issued in their name to accommodate mobility needs or having an off-campus job that requires the student to drive to work. To request a first-year parking permit, contact Parking and Transit Services at 540-568-3300 or parkingservices@jmu.edu. If a first-year is granted permission to purchase a permit, where can they park? R10 Lot, located on Port Republic Road, is the designated lot for first-year parking, with the exception of students in possession of a current, valid accessible permit issued in their name. Additional parking privileges may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Parking in some lots may be restricted during special events. Refer to posted signs. Does Parking and Transit Services endorse any private, off-campus storage lots? No. JMU’s official policy is that first-year students are not allowed to have vehicles on campus. It is important to note that purchasing space in a private lot is not the same as purchasing a JMU parking permit and does not entitle the vehicle to park on JMU-owned, operated or leased property. Where can I find a parking map? A campus parking map is available on the Parking and Transit Services website at jmu.edu/parking/_files/parkingmap.pdf. Paper copies may be obtained at the Parking and Transit Services office. What should my family or guests do about parking when they come for a visit? Guests will need to obtain a free visitor parking permit from the Parking and Transit Services office if they are on campus during the weekdays. If visiting between the hours of 3 p.m. on Fridays through 7 a.m. on Mondays, visitors may park in standard, unmarked spaces without a permit. Visitors who arrive on campus after Parking and Transit Services’ office hours should park in a standard, unmarked parking space and contact Parking and Transit Services the following day if they receive a citation. If attending an official campus event, visitors should contact the event organizer to inquire about parking directions. I/My family received a parking citation. What should I do? If you believe the citation was written in error, contact Parking and Transit Services during business hours. As an upperclassman, how do I obtain a parking permit?
