Who can join the Marching Royal Dukes? All JMU students who are interested in continuing with music at JMU, being part of one of JMU’s greatest traditions, supporting the Dukes, traveling and performing locally, around the country and around the world can join the MRDs regardless of their major! Of our 465 members (2020), only about 80 are music majors -- all others represent practically every major and department on our campus. All you need is prior band experience. How do I join the MRDs? It’s simple 2-step process: 1. Visit the MRD website and fill out the online membership form. Once this is submitted, you will receive a confirmation email from the JMU Band Office with additional instructions. 2. You will then need to register for the class to finalize this process. How much does it cost to join? The JMU Bands pay for almost all costs of being a member, including meals and residence hall expenses during our pre-season camp, season travel, game day accommodations, etc. There is a course fee that will be assessed to all members when you register for the class. How much time does it take? The Marching Royal Dukes is a two-credit class. All members are required to attend pre-season band camp during the week before prior to the fall semester. Are there auditions? All interested color guard and percussion members must submit the required audition materials and audition. All wind players are able to participate without audition. However, halftime show marching spots (for our set instrumentation) will be determined by auditions that take place during the pre- season camp. Questions? Contact the director, Mr. Scott Rikkers at rikkersd@jmu.edu.
