Center for Multicultural Student Services In addition to providing a home away from home to the multicultural com- munity, the Center for Multicultural Student Services has a great schedule of activities and programs (guest speakers, trips and more) to help all of us to learn from one another and explore our differences and similarities. CMSS is an integral part of the student experience at JMU as we educate and advocate for racial equity, intersectionality and effective allyship. CMSS strives to support an inclusive campus through dialogue, leader- ship experiences and cultural celebrations beyond the classroom that honor and value diverse identities. The Furious Flower Poetry Center at JMU is the nation’s first academic

center dedicated to Black poetry. For more than 25 years, Furious Flower has reached thousands of poets, educators, students, and poetry lovers through its decade-de- fining conferences, groundbreaking media and anthologies, workshops, reading series, and seminars. Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression SOGIE works toward promoting JMU’s commitment to diversity through education, support, advocacy and the fostering of equity for all students, inclusive of

All new students are required to attend Stop the Haze: Involvement for Well Being during Weeks of Welcome, where you will learn how things like hazing or hazardous drinking can occur, and how to respond if it does. Madison Center for Civic Engagement Dukes are voters and the Madison Center for Civic Engagement will help you register and learn about voting while also giving you a chance to talk across political and cultural differences about difficult issues. From Dukes Discourse Thursdays and the Dukes Vote podcast, to educational primers on issues facing democracy and our week of deliberative dialogues, we’ll help you construc- tively express your views, vote, and be engaged civic leaders.
