Why ethical reasoning? Almost every decision we make has ripple effects. This is why it is important to slow down and consider the best course of action, knowing that our decision affects more than just ourselves. Introducing an ethical reasoning strategy at the point of decision-making helps us pause, reflect and ask questions before acting. Questioning helps us suspend our initial impulses that can be loaded with untested assumptions and bias.

JMU 2022

JMU’s Ethical Reasoning in Action offers Eight Key Questions to help us approach decisions with curiosity, rather than snap judgments; with consideration for others, rather than only ourselves. Using 8KQ can improve the way we engage with the complex issues we face in our personal, professional and civic lives. It’s Complicated.

In (A)I-care, a hypothetical scenario, you must consider the ethical questions to raise before your university adopts a chatbot counseling app to provide initial mental health services to campus. Should your university use artificial intelligence technology to provide mental health support? You and a group of new Dukes will ask Eight Key Questions to inform your decision. You may discover that this choice is not as simple as it seems. Prepare yourself to actively participate in an academic experience with ethical reasoning: It’s Complicated. This interactive workshop is designed specifically for new JMU students during Weeks of Welcome.

The Eight Key Questions

The (A)I-care scenario deals with our mental health; a concern to all of us. From time to time social isolation, global crises and uncertainty overwhelm us, and the mental health services we depend on. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, the JMU Counseling Center website has several online resources available at jmu.edu/counselingctr.

Complete this checklist:

Complete the It’s Complicated Canvas course, available starting Aug. 1. Ponder the Eight Key Questions and look for situations in which they apply.

q

q

Fairness How can I (we) act justly, equitably, balancing interests? Outcomes What possible actions achieve the best short- and long-term outcomes? Responsibilities What duties and/or obligations apply? Character What actions help me (us) become my (our) ideal? Liberty How do I (we) show respect for personal freedom, autonomy, consent? Empathy How would I (we) act if I (we) cared about all involved? Authority What do legitimate authorities (e.g., experts, law, my god) expect?

Respond to the questions about the scenario. Take the survey at the end of the course.

q

Simple tasks. Yet the path to a decision may be complicated.

Rights What rights, if any (e.g., innate, legal, social) apply? 4 Use the “FORCLEAR” acronym to help you remember all 8KQ.

Welcome to JMU! As you prepare for your first semester as a JMU student, here are some tips to help with your transition: Health and Well-being

COUNSELING CENTER RESOURCES

• It is important to know that the Counseling Center services offered at JMU are short-term in nature. • If you are currently seeing a mental health provider, please make plans now to continue that relationship through telehealth, if possible. • If you plan to see a mental health provider in the Harrisonburg area, make plans now to schedule your initial visit. • Counseling Connections can help you determine your best option.

Schedule a visit

Counseling Connections

MEDICATIONS • Have a plan for maintaining all

medications that you are currently using. • Practice taking prescribed medications on your own. The University Health Center does not administer oral self-dispensed medications. • For support with the administration of injections, submit a request to the UHC. • If you are currently connected to a provider, confirm that they can manage your prescriptions while you are away. Some providers are not able to do so due to distance or state lines. • To connect with a local prescriber, make plans now to find one and schedule your initial visit. • If your medications are not available through the UHC pharmacy, identify a local pharmacy and way to get there.

• Include your medications when completing the Pre-Entry Health Requirements step.

UHC FORMS PHARMACY MYJMUCHART

OTHER SERVICES • Spaces to relax and unwind include the Oasis, the Studio, TDU and many other areas. For a private space on campus, the Office of Student Accountability and Restorative Practices may have a space available. Call 540-568-6218 or email osarp@jmu.edu for a room reservation. • If you need academic accommodations, contact the Office of Disability Services. ODS If you have a medical alert bracelet, please continue to wear it in case you are unable to provide critical information in an emergency.
