Placement Assessments To assist you in making sure you are only taking the courses needed as you transfer to JMU, you should eval- uate whether you need to take the ALEKS Math Assessment and Language Placement Exam. These assessments are only required for some transfer students depending on your major and previous coursework. Use the decision tree surveys to determine whether you need one or both assessments. The ALEKS Math Assessment is a 25-item, open-response, proctored, web-based math placement assessment used to assess your current working knowledge of math principles from algebra through precalculus. Please allow three hours to complete the exam. Your score will be available in MyMad- ison within 24 hours of completion. You can take the ALEKS assessment up to three times. In order to retake the assessment, you must wait 48 hours after you have taken the assessment and spend at least three hours in the Preparation and Learning Modules provided in the ALEKS. The highest score of all attempts will be used. Though all transfer students are not required to take the

B.S. programs do not have language requirements, so you would not have to take the placement exam unless you wanted to continue your language studies at JMU.

Language Placement Exam Language Placement Exams are offered in order to determine the placement of a student who is continuing the study of a language at JMU. The exams include reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar questions. French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish are online only, and additional languages are avail- able upon request. You may take the exam only once per language every three semesters. There is not a time limit, so please take your time! You will need to take the FLPE if all the following two statements are true: ◆ You are pursuing a program of study that leads to a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Business Administration degree that requires a foreign language (see the list at right); and ◆ You have previous experience with French, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish.
